The Old Engine Shed

Proving once again that AluK products can look just at home in a traditional property as in a contemporary new build we fabricated  tis stunning installation at a former traction engine shed.

The restored outbuilding belonged to a Victorian farmhouse in the heart of the National Trust’s 5000-acre Ashridge estate. Now Grade II listed, it had once housed the landowner’s personal traction engine, but it had long been empty and neglected.

However, when it was rescued by the current owners, they set about transforming it into a comfortable and thermally efficient home, using a specification in line with part L1A of the building Regs.

The main contractors on the project were restoration specialists Stephen Russell Construction who worked with the client and their architect to ensure that the materials used were in keeping with the building’s heritage but still met modern performance criteria.

The client wanted the look of aluminium windows to reflect the building’s industrial links  Our team proposed a specification using windows in AluK’s 58BW, in a range of configurations including casements, tilt and turn and fixed lights, alongside entrance doors in the matching 58BD door system, bi-fold doors in the BSF70 system and sliding doors in BSC94. All are polyester powder coated in RAL7016 Anthracite Grey, with a durable matt finish.

Although it was the aesthetics of the windows, with slim sight lines throughout which the clients liked, they were also convinced by the thermal efficiency, weather performance and security of the AluK products.

Trevor Westbrook-Lay, our Managing Director was delighted with the project:

“What we demonstrated at the traction engine shed was how versatile the 58BW window system is. We could use the same system for all the different window configurations and achieve a finished result which is perfectly in keeping with the age and style of the property.”

The following products were manufactured from the AlUk progfile.

AluK 58BW Fixed & Casement Windows

AluK 58BW Tilturn Windows

AluK 58BD Doors

AluK BSF70 Bi-Fold Doors

AluK BSC94 Sliding Doors

The 58BW windows compliment this timber-clad Engine Shed beautifully, modernising without losing the history. The project oozes character!
