Always refreshing to showcase some of our recent work. We have just completed the manufacture and installation of a range of AluK (GB) - The Experts in Aluminium 58BW windows and a a double set of patio doors 58BD in RAL 9005 matt black. The result is a striking addition and clearly sets of the extension off a treat.
We worked closely with our client in Bury St Edmunds and the windows and doors were added to an extension which was once part of the old Gaol house in the town.
Built 1803–1805 as Bury St Edmunds’ new county prison. The Central building was the governor’s house, surrounded by radiating cell blocks.
The prison closed in1880 and most of the complex was demolished.
However the governor’s house and gateway survived and are now residential, properties.
The building formed the central hub of the town prison, built in the early 1800s. The prison used a radial “panopticon” design, where several cell wings and exercise yards spread outward from the central building. This allowed guards to observe prisoners from a central point.
The structure known today as The Fort served as the prison governor’s residence, positioned in the middle of these radiating wings. Most of the prison buildings were demolished later, leaving only the governor’s house and the distinctive entrance gateway facing the road
