Proving once again that AluK products can look just as at home in a traditional property as in a contemporary new build, we were delighted to fabricate and install a stunning aluminium system at a former traction engine shed.
The restored outbuilding forms part of a Victorian farmhouse located in the heart of the National Trust’s 5,000-acre Ashridge Estate. Once home to the landowner’s personal traction engine, the Grade II listed shed had long been empty and neglected. When rescued by the current owners, the vision was to transform it into a comfortable, thermally efficient home, fully compliant with Part L1A of the Building Regulations, while respecting the heritage of the building.
Restoration specialists Stephen Russell Construction acted as the main contractors, working closely with the client and their architect to ensure that all materials and installations were sympathetic to the building’s historic character, yet still met modern performance standards.
The client wanted aluminium windows that reflected the property’s industrial past while delivering exceptional functionality. Our team recommended a specification using AluK’s 58BW window system in a range of configurations, including casements, tilt-and-turn units, and fixed lights. Complementing these were 58BD entrance doors, BSF70 bi-fold doors, and BSC94 sliding doors—all polyester powder-coated in Anthracite Grey RAL 7016 with a durable matt finish.
While the client was initially drawn to the aesthetic appeal—slim sightlines throughout that maintained the building’s historic charm—they were equally impressed by the technical performance. The AluK systems offered excellent thermal efficiency, superior weather resistance, and robust security, ensuring the home was both comfortable and safe.
Trevor Westbrook-Lay, our Managing Director, commented on the project:
“What we demonstrated at the traction engine shed was how versatile the 58BW window system is. We could use the same system for all the different window configurations and achieve a finished result perfectly in keeping with the age and style of the property.”
The project included the following AluK products:
AluK 58BW Fixed & Casement Windows
AluK 58BW Tilt-and-Turn Windows
AluK 58BD Entrance Doors
AluK BSF70 Bi-Fold Doors
AluK BSC94 Sliding Doors
The 58BW windows complement the timber-clad exterior beautifully, modernising the Engine Shed without compromising its history. The overall result is a home that seamlessly combines heritage character with contemporary performance, creating a property that truly oozes charm and functionality.
